Let’s face it: there are certain candidates who are more desirable than others, but what exactly is it that makes them more desirable?
The question came up – “Who is your dream hire?” – during the January event hosted by the Triangle Interactive Media Association (read my intro to the TIMA event here).
What makes someone a desirable member of the team?
The Panel, of course, came up with a wide range of answers – some funny and some serious. I am always interested in hearing what business leaders within the web industry have to say about the kind of people they want on their team. I know plenty of talented individuals who are on the job hunt and I love to make worthwhile connections whenever possible.
I was most interested in Zach Clayton’s answer, he’s the Founder and CEO of Three Ships Media, which included “an entrepreneurial spirit.”
We work in an industry that is always developing, because the technology is getting better, more robust, more creative. There are more possibilities always presenting themselves, and having people on your side who are considered self-starters or entrepreneurial thinkers will ensure that you’ve got diverse and creative brainpower ready to help the company solve any problems that come up.
I completely agreed with that answer, but it didn’t surprise me. And I don’t mean to sound like an pretentious know-it-all, it’s just that I’ve found that to be a commonly accepted truth within the industry – at least the areas of the industry that I’ve worked for – the more brilliant minds actually owning the issue and working through it in order to solve it…like their pay check depended on it (uh…because it did), the better pool of options there was to work with.
The discussion took an interesting turn when someone – I can’t really remember who is was (it may have been Zach)- mentioned that desirable new hires should also be self-aware.
To me – that was the real kicker.
Stay tuned. I don’t want to bore your with an überlong post (it’s Friday, after all). I’ll finish this up next week. Promise.
