Stickin’ it to the MAN!!!

This was a project we could get into — sticking it to the man. The insurance man that is.

Insurance adds massive hidden inefficiencies to the health care world. Their billing practices are so overblown with complexity and red tape that doctors must hire staff to focus specifically on nothing else but filing and managing insurance claims.

Enter Direct Pay Health. They have the tools to cure our primary healthcare woes - solutions that enable doctors to focus again on Quality, Cost, Access, and Transparency. Does the current insurance system do that? Oh friends… FRIENDS! Hahaha! No need to answer - that was rhetorical!

Time was of the essence for this one, and there was a lot to do. Aside from the standard user interface and web design portions, they needed Drupal integration, form design and Highrise integration, newsletter design and MailChimp integration, event and web banners, brochures, copy writing, web marketing/SEO, and some social media integration to boot. Like we said - lots to do!!

This one was an all out blitz. Just two months later our clients were ecstatic to announce their new business initiative to the world.

Best website evvvah! - Chris Schoffner

Wow. That’s amazing. Love the colors, textures, and layout. Two thumbs up. - BJ Lawson

Learn a little more about what they do and let us know what you think!

Rock the web.

Science — Technology — The future of Mankind

It all started one dark and stormy night. The call came in, and the voice was clear:

I need a complete redesign to build a major online news source. I need mercenaries, now!!

Lucky for him, he hit the sweet spot – we’re the go to mercs for these intense black ops missions.

The site is Singularity Hub, and the content flat out rocks. We bet you can’t read just one story. It’s the Lays potato chips of the web content world.

So what was used to create this Singularity Hub? Our client is aiming to be the Huffington Post of the science and technology world so we started with some inspiration there, only we had to make it better (gotta maintain our street cred). Our goal was to simplify the content while enhancing the experience. We needed to crispen up the interface and keep the content organized and clean. With this much content, that was no easy task, but it came together nicely.

Once we nailed the UI and design, we built out a custom WordPress site fully optimized for the heavy traffic Singularity experiences. And there’s good reason for that traffic. It’s addictive.

Traffic has shot through the roof - it has been amazing!

If you’ve ever doubted the impact of a solid web design and development, doubt no more.

So, go check it out (just remember to come back once you’re done!) We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Oh… and we won an Interactive Media Award in the Science and Technology sector. Just sayin.

You’ve seen the news: Google offers $6 billion (emphasis on the letter B) for Groupon. And what do they do?

They say “no” of course.

Why? Because they know people want to shop and save money, and they know they are worth more than the eye-bulging numbers offered.

Enter Josh and Will of QponIt - they had a vision for their own group savings website that gives customers great deals but doesn’t break the bank for the businesses selling the coupons. And you know what? We’re down with that crazy deal action. So we took the challenge and created a unique comic-themed chef-d’oeuvre.

All I got for you guys is WOW! Literally could not have even thought this up in my head. The site looks PHENOMENAL!

The design was prepared, tenderized, rolled into a handy custom Ruby on Rails application, peppered with some ecommerce, baked at 375° for 1 hour and served piping hot to the savingsphere. Complete with an easy to use content management system, they got a tempting site that goes down smooth and leaves users satisfied.

Go ahead - save yourself more than a buck or two!

Appia is not an app store. We are a marketing platform, bringing the content from over 32,000 talented developers and content creators to the mobile application storefronts of 40 partners around the world.

OnWired took this challenge and produced a savvy website worthy of their standing in the mobile application development industry. They do work with Rovio, you know, the cool cats that produce everyone’s favorite Angry Birds?

We shot for a richly textured and bold design, incorporating a little leather, ‘cuz who doesn’t love some leather right? To shave time and hit our 60-day mark, Wordpress was called off the bench for easy content management integration.

Duke Photography needed some touch ups and OnWired had the “tools” for the job (we had the right software too).

I have to say, we were a little more than excited when Duke Photography reached out to us to enter the dark room and reproduce the newly branded Duke University stock photography website.

The mission:

bring some modern and fresh design elements to the previous, challenging to navigate, all-black site

improve the user interface for searching, purchasing, and downloading their favorite images—utilizing Duke’s Net ID system

bring a little relief to the Duke staff in charge of managing the immense amount of images they maintain

just make life a little more wonderful

After a round of user interface and design volleys, we were off to the coding room where we intricately weaved the Duke Net ID login system within our home grown Ruby on Rails programming fiesta of wonder. The search bar functionality was greatly improved by providing an inline advanced search—try it out.

Search page looks wonderful. I like the manageable results per page.

Love the great use of the real estate – open, airy yet chock full o’ info and images.

And yeah… we think we made everyone’s life a little more wonderful.

Oh heck, here’s one more quote for giggles…

The site looks great! The design is very clean and draws attention to the images. The white and grey backgrounds
are much easier on the eye.

Hedrick Child Care has raised the bar with their new preschool websites in Raleigh and Durham

Hedrick Child Care knew they needed a Web presence, but weren’t sure which way to turn. Luckily…or maybe fatefully; no, luckily fate stepped in. Little did we know our very own OnWired accountant was Hedrick’s accountant too! Small world, eh?

Mickie Hedrick came to us looking for two Web sites: one for Hope Valley Preschool and another for Durant Road Preschool.
Our investigators found the edge that ILS needed.

The night was sultry. A cacophony of ringing exploded inside our headquarters. It was the phone. Integrated Laboratory Systems (ILS), a provider in research and testing services for toxicology, pathology, histology, and environmental and information sciences (whew!), had decided to put the fate of their website in our hands.

They needed a professional design with excellent usability and enough edge to set them apart from their competitors. Our designers spent hours doing their very best detective work, tearing apart the existing site, analyzing the data, and deducing the best way to proceed. Then they leapt into action. After days of toil, they had solved the case.

Next, the design was shipped off to OnWired’s developers, who were already hard at work in their secret lair. Their first step was to kill Joomla and get ILS into something more suited to their needs. Enter ExpressionEngine. After a few tweaks here and a few hacks there, the new site sprang to life. Then, with keyboard-callused fingertips, our developers flipped the almighty DNS switch and introduced ILS’s new web presence to the world.

It had been six years since their last design and our allies at TCS needed a refresh. OnWired answered the call.

It had been nearly a half-decade since our fearless leader, Tony Chester, designed TCS. Back in those days — when Flash’s unorthodox usability was ruling the roost — designs stuck in conventional “uncool” HTML began embracing whacky content architectures. Looking back, it was a dark age for web design.

Thankfully those evil usability dinosaurs have long since expired (for the most part), so TCS circa-’08 could get in today’s swim.

Bill Murray and Barney Oakes, the ringleaders at TCS, wanted a total refresh. To get with the times, they wanted a CMS platform that would allow them to maintain their own content, in addition to being able to blog and share articles. We delivered a design that suited their customers over ExpressionEngine, all while maintaining their existing identity and color palette.

Today our friends at TCS are enjoying their sparkly new website and blogging their hearts out. And, as with every customer, their happiness is our happiness.

You guys are great! Thanks for being such a valuable partner!

Call us good samaritans if you’d like. We’re just happy to give back to the community we love.

In the latter part of 2008, as the economy shifted from bad to worse, we noticed a rapid increase in job resumes. We knew we couldn’t house every job-seeker who came through the door, though the building list of applicants struck a soft spot in our hearts.

In January, once the hustle and bustle of the holidays was over, we kicked up the idea to start a new creative job website internally. Unlike other job websites, we wanted our service to be targeted to more than just designers and developers. After all, we figured the economic crisis at hand was a community problem — and how else would the copywriters, SEO specialists and social media experts of the world find jobs?

Your Web Job was born.

We took three weeks to flesh out a good identity for the brand, and another month to develop a proper back-end for the service. After over 40 work days and 250 combined hours of work time, Your Web Job successfully launched to a warm ovation in mid-March.

Anybody know what LGBT means?

We get lots of sales leads. Some are serious people with serious budgets. Others are not-so-serious people who are just shopping around for the best deal. And then there are others that just make us scratch our heads. Here is one such email:

“I need an ecommerce site so I can sell lgbt jewelry.”

Ok. Color us stupid, but we had no idea what LGBT jewelry was. At first, Tony thought that if you rearranged the letters a bit, LGBT might be some sort of text-message abbreviation for “low budget”. One quick search on Google, however, and our eyes were opened: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. Not at all what we were expecting. It turns out that Kristy sells wedding and commitment rings (very nice rings in fact) to the LGBT community, which should be quite profitable now that Ellen and Portia have legally tied the knot.

Kristy wanted a simple, classy ecommerce site that provided her clients with easy access to her catalog of ring designs. After seeing some of our initial design mockups, Kristy had this to say:

“Yesterday when I opened these I was dancing around my office. I guess it’s a good thing I work by myself. I really can’t say enough great things about you guys.”

As usual, we turned to ExpressionEngine to power the back-end of the site. Aside from being a high-powered content management system, it was extensible enough to implement a great shopping cart system.
